Overcome

John 16:33 – “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

John 14:27 – Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

John 15:21 – They will treat you this way because of my name, for they do not know the one who sent me.

1 John 5:3-4 – In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith.

Revelation 2:7 – Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who is victorious, I will give the right to eat from the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.

Application:

  • ·         In its greetings of peace the world can only express a longing or wish.
  • ·         Because Christians do not belong to the world, persecution from the world is inevitable.
  • ·         To overcome the world is to gain victory over its sinful pattern of life, which is another way of describing obedience to God.
  • ·         “Paradise” was originally a Persian word for a pleasure garden.
