Believe That You Came From God

John 16:8-11,27-30 – When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: about sin, because people do not believe in me; about righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; and about judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned…No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father.” Then Jesus’ disciples said, “Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech. Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe that you came from God.”

1 Kings 17:24 – Then the woman said to Elijah, “Now I know that you are a man of God and that the word of the Lord from your mouth is the truth.”

John 1:7 – He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe.

John 4:34 – “My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work.

John 17:8 – For I gave them the words you gave me and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me.

Application:

  • ·         “About righteousness” was the righteousness brought about by Christ’s sacrificial death.
  • ·         The widow had addressed Elijah as a man of God previously, but now she knew in a much more experiential way that he truly was a prophet of the Lord.
  • ·         Christ is explaining why the disciples can come directly to the Father in prayer: They have loved and trusted in Jesus, and in love God will hear their requests in Jesus’ name.
  • ·         John the Baptist’s singular ministry was to testify about Jesus.
  • ·         John often mentions that Jesus depended on the Father and did the work the Father sent Him to do.
  • ·         Three things about the disciples are mentioned: (1) They accepted the teaching. (2) They knew with certainty Jesus’ divine origin. Acceptance of that revelation led them further into truth. (3) They believed.
