Falsely

Leviticus 19:12 – “‘Do not swear falsely by my name and so profane the name of your God. I am the Lord.

Jeremiah 7:9-10 – “‘Will you steal and murder, commit adultery and perjury, burn incense to Baal and follow other gods you have not known, and then come and stand before me in this house, which bears my Name, and say, “We are safe”—safe to do all these detestable things?

Exodus 20:7 – “You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.

Jeremiah 34:16 – But now you have turned around and profaned my name; each of you has taken back the male and female slaves you had set free to go where they wished. You have forced them to become your slaves again.

Application:

  • ·         Tragically, such sins as “following other gods you have not known” would be the cause of Israel’s exile to lands they had not known.
  • ·         Misuse the name of the Lord is done by profaning God’s name—e.g., by swearing falsely by it, as on the witness stand in court.
  • ·         The Lord’s name is profaned by breaking His covenants.
