Deuteronomy 7:14-18 –
You will be blessed more than any
other people; none of your men or women will be childless, nor will any of your
livestock be without young. The Lord will keep you free from every disease. He will not inflict on you the horrible
diseases you knew in Egypt, but he will inflict them on all who hate you. You must destroy all the
peoples the Lord your God gives over to you. Do not look on them with pity and do not serve their gods, for that will be a snare to you. You may say to yourselves,
“These nations are stronger than we are. How can we drive them out?” But do not be afraid of them; remember well what the Lord your God did to Pharaoh and to all Egypt.
Judges
3:6 – They took their daughters in
marriage and gave their own daughters to their sons, and served their gods.
Exodus
10:7 – Pharaoh’s officials said to
him, “How long will this man be a snare to
us? Let the people go, so that they may worship the Lord their God. Do you not yet realize
that Egypt is ruined?”
Numbers
14:9 – Only do not rebel against
the Lord. And do not be afraid of
the people of the land, because we will devour them. Their
protection is gone, but the Lord is
with us. Do not be afraid of them.”
Psalm
105:5-6 – Remember
the wonders he has done, his miracles, and the
judgments he pronounced, you his servants, the descendants of
Abraham, his chosen ones, the children of Jacob.
Psalm
119:52 – I remember, Lord, your ancient laws, and I find comfort in them.
Deuteronomy
4:10 – Remember the day you stood
before the Lord your
God at Horeb, when he said to me, “Assemble the people before
me to hear my words so that they may learn to
revere me as long as they live in the land and
may teach them to their children.”
Application:
- · The degenerating effect of intermarriage is well illustrated in Solomon’s experience.
- · Human rebellion and disobedience always bring death and destruction in their wake.
- · There are no walls, no fortifications, no factors of size or bearing, and certainly no gods that can withstand the onslaught of God’s people when the Lord is with them.
- · As Lord, He commands and it is done.
- · God’s law is not fickle but is grounded firmly in His unchanging moral character.
- · The divine call to Israel to remember the Lord’s past redemptive acts—especially how He delivered them from slavery in Egypt—is a common theme in Deuteronomy and is summarized: “Remember the days of old”.
