Deuteronomy
7:22-25 – The Lord your God will drive out those nations
before you, little by little. You will not be allowed to eliminate them
all at once, or the wild animals will multiply around you. But the Lord your God will deliver them over to you,
throwing them into great confusion until they are destroyed. He will give
their kings into your hand, and you will wipe out
their names from under heaven. No one will be able to stand up against you; you will destroy them. The images of their gods you are to burn in the fire. Do not covet the silver and gold on
them, and do not take it for yourselves, or you will be ensnared by it, for it is
detestable to the Lord your God.
Deuteronomy 3:22 – Do not be afraid of
them; the Lord your
God himself will fight for you.”
Joshua 1:5 – No one will be able to stand
against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave
you nor forsake you.
Exodus 20:17 – “You shall not
covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your
neighbor’s wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything
that belongs to your neighbor.”
Application:
- · The conquest narratives emphasize the truth that without the Lord’s help Israel’s victory would be impossible. The Lord’s power, not Israel’s unaided strength, achieved victory.
- · God was with Joshua to direct, sustain and assure success.
- · Covet means desire something with evil motivation. To break God’s commandments inwardly is equivalent to breaking them outwardly.
