Deuteronomy 32:29-34 –
If only they were wise and would
understand this and discern what their end will be! How
could one man chase a thousand, or two put ten thousand to flight,
unless their Rock had sold them, unless the Lord had given them up? For their
rock is not like our Rock, as even our enemies concede. Their
vine comes from the vine of Sodom and from the fields of Gomorrah.
Their grapes are filled with poison, and their clusters with bitterness.
Their wine is the venom of serpents, the deadly poison of cobras.
“Have I not kept this in reserve and sealed it in my vaults?
Genesis
49:24-25 – But his
bow remained steady, his strong arms stayed limber, because
of the hand of the Mighty One of Jacob, because of the Shepherd, the Rock of Israel,
because of your father’s God, who helps you, because of
the Almighty, who blesses you with
blessings of the skies above, blessings of the deep springs below,
blessings of the breast and womb.
Deuteronomy
29:18 – Make sure there is no man or
woman, clan or tribe among you today whose heart turns away
from the Lord our
God to go and worship the gods of those nations; make sure there is no root
among you that produces such bitter poison.
Jeremiah
2:22 – Although you
wash yourself with soap and use an abundance of cleansing
powder, the stain of your guilt is still before me,”
declares the Sovereign Lord.
Application:
- · “Rock of Israel” was Israel’s sure defense—a figure often used also in Psalms and Isaiah.
- · “Root…that produces such bitter poison” was the poison of idolatry, involving the rejection of the Lord.
- · The Lord’s plans for the future are fixed and certain. Sin will be punished in due time.
- · Sins can be removed and forgiven, but only when the sinner repents and confesses.
