Deuteronomy 32:1-4 – Listen, you heavens, and I will speak;
hear, you earth, the words of my mouth.
Let my teaching fall like rain and my words descend like dew, like showers on new grass, like abundant rain on tender plants.
I will proclaim the name of the Lord.
Oh, praise the greatness of our God!
He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just.
A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is he.
Isaiah
1:2 – Hear me, you
heavens! Listen, earth! For the Lord has spoken: “I reared
children and brought them up, but they have
rebelled against me.
Genesis
49:24-25 – But his
bow remained steady, his strong arms stayed limber, because
of the hand of the Mighty One of Jacob, because of the Shepherd, the Rock of Israel,
because of your father’s God, who helps you, because of
the Almighty, who blesses you with
blessings of the skies above, blessings of the deep springs below,
blessings of the breast and womb.
Deuteronomy
4:35 – You were shown these things
so that you might know that the Lord is
God; besides him there is no other.
Genesis
18:25 – Far be it from you to do
such a thing—to kill the
righteous with the wicked, treating the righteous and
the wicked alike. Far be it from you! Will not the Judge of
all the earth do right?”
Application:
- · The prophet calls on the heavens and the earth to testify to the truth of God’s accusation against Israel and the rightness of His judgment—since they were witnesses of His covenant.
- · “Rock of Israel” was Israel’s sure defense—a figure often used also in Psalms and Isaiah.
- · Moses insists that there is only one God.
- · Abraham based his plea on the justice and authority of God, confident that God would do what was right.
