Deuteronomy
32:19-21 – The Lord saw this and rejected them because
he was angered by his sons and daughters. “I will hide my face from them,” he said,
“and see what their end will be; for they are a perverse
generation, children who are unfaithful. They made me
jealous by what is no god and angered me with their worthless
idols. I will make them envious by those who are not a people;
I will make them angry by a nation that has no understanding.
Psalm 78:59 – When God
heard them, he was furious; he rejected Israel completely.
Jeremiah
2:5 – This is what the Lord says: “What fault did your
ancestors find in me, that they strayed so far from me? They
followed worthless idols and became worthless themselves.
Jeremiah 16:19 – Lord, my strength and my fortress, my refuge in time of distress, to you the nations will
come from the ends of the earth and say, “Our ancestors possessed
nothing but false gods, worthless idols that did them no good.
Application:
- · “Rejected Israel completely” meant abandoned her to her enemies.
- · Israel failed to understand the good news about Christ.
- · “Worthless” is Jeremiah’s favorite way of describing idols. Idolaters are no better than the idols they worship.
- · Idols were unprofitable to Israel.
