Let Him Not Deceive Himself

Job 15:31 – Let him not deceive himself by trusting what is worthless, for he will get nothing in return.

Mark 13:5 – Jesus said to them: “Watch out that no one deceives you.

Jeremiah 7:4 – Do not trust in deceptive words and say, “This is the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord!”

Micah 3:4 – Then they will cry out to the Lord, but he will not answer them. At that time he will hide his face from them because of the evil they have done.

Application:

  • ·         It is clear from such commands as “Watch out” and “You must be on your guard” that one of the main purposes of the Olivet discourse was to alert the disciples to the danger of deception.
  • ·         The idea that God would not destroy Jerusalem simply because His dwelling, the temple, was located there was a delusion, fostered in part by the miraculous deliverance of the city during the reign of Hezekiah.
  • ·         Disobedience leads to separation from God.
