John 18:6-11 – When Jesus said, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground.
Again he asked them, “Who is it you want?” “Jesus of Nazareth,” they said. Jesus
answered, “I told you that I am he. If you are
looking for me, then let these men go.” This happened so that the
words he had spoken would be fulfilled: “I have not lost one of those you gave me.”
Then Simon Peter, who
had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, cutting off his
right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.) Jesus commanded Peter, “Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the
cup the Father has given me?”
John
6:39 – And this is the will of him
who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me, but raise them up at the last day.
John 17:12 – While I was with them, I
protected them and kept them safe by that name you gave me. None has
been lost except the one doomed to destruction so that Scripture would be fulfilled.
Psalm 16:5 – Lord, you alone are my portion and my cup; you make my lot secure.
Revelation 14:10 – A third angel followed them and said in a loud voice: “If
anyone worships the beast and its
image and receives its mark on their forehead or on
their hand, they, too, will drink the wine of God’s fury, which has been poured full strength into the cup of his wrath. They will be tormented with burning sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and of the Lamb.
Mark 14:36 – “Abba, Father,” he said, “everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what
I will, but what you will.”
Application:
- · True believers will persevere because of Christ’s firm hold on them.
- · Christ’s power is adequate for every need.
- · To the godly the Lord offers a cup of blessing or salvation; He makes the wicked drink from a cup of wrath.
- · In the Old Testament God’s wrath is commonly pictured as a cup of wine to be drunk. It is not the outworking of impersonal laws of retribution but the response of a righteous God to those who refuse His love and grace.
- · “This cup” was the chalice of death and of God’s wrath that Jesus took from the Father’s hand in fulfillment of His mission.
