Proverbs
3:7 – Do not be
wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and shun evil.
Proverbs 26:5 – Answer a fool according to his folly, or he will be
wise in his own eyes.
Psalm 111:10 – The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; all who follow his
precepts have good understanding. To him belongs eternal praise.
Exodus 20:20 – Moses said to
the people, “Do not be afraid. God has come to test you,
so that the fear of God will be with you to keep you
from sinning.”
Job 1:1 – In the land of Uz there
lived a man whose name was Job. This man was blameless and
upright; he feared God and
shunned evil.
Proverbs 1:7 – The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.
Application:
- · Sometimes folly must be plainly exposed and denounced.
- · “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom” is the classic Old Testament statement concerning the religious basis of what it means to be wise.
- · Do not think that God’s display of His majesty is intended simply to fill you with abject fear. He has come to enter into covenant with you as your heavenly King.
- · “Blameless and upright” means spiritually and morally upright.
- · Fear of the Lord is a loving reverence for God that includes submission to his lordship and to the commands of His word.
