Proverbs
2:1-8 – My son, if you accept my words
and store up my commands within you, turning your ear to wisdom
and applying your heart to understanding—indeed, if you call out
for insight and cry aloud for understanding, and if you
look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure,
then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God.
For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come
knowledge and understanding. He holds success in store for the
upright, he is a shield to those whose walk is blameless,
for he guards the course of the just and protects the way of his
faithful ones.
Genesis
15:1 – After this, the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: “Do not be
afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward.
Job 1:1 – In the land of Uz there
lived a man whose name was Job. This man was blameless and
upright; he feared God and
shunned evil.
Application:
- · Whether “shield” or “sovereign” is meant, the reference is to the Lord as Abram’s king. As elsewhere, “shield” stands for king.
- · “Store up…within you” just as the psalmist hid God’s word in his heart to avoid sin.
- · “Blameless and upright” means spiritually and morally upright.
