John 5:35-38 – John was a lamp that burned and gave light, and you chose for a time to enjoy his light.
“I have testimony weightier than that of John. For the works that the Father has
given me to finish—the very works that I am doing—testify that the Father has
sent me. And the Father who sent me has himself testified concerning me. You have never heard his voice
nor seen his form, nor does his word dwell in you, for you do not believe the one he sent.
John
14:11 – Believe me when I say that I
am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence
of the works themselves.
John 10:25-26 – Jesus answered, “I did tell you, but you do not believe. The works I do in my Father’s name
testify about me, but you do not believe because you are not my sheep.
John 1:18 – No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is
himself God and is in
closest relationship with the Father, has made him known.
John 5:39-40 – You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal
life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about
me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life.
Application:
- · “Works” were the miracles of Jesus, which testified to what He is and to His divine mission.
- · Faith includes believing that Jesus is one with the Father.
- · “The one and only Son, who is Himself God” is an explicit declaration of Christ’s deity.
- · Despite their reverence for the very letter of Scripture, the Jewish leaders did not recognize the one to whom Scripture bears supreme testimony.
