Deuteronomy
4:11-12 – You came
near and stood at the foot of the mountain while it blazed with fire
to the very heavens, with black clouds and deep darkness. Then the Lord spoke to you out of the fire. You heard the
sound of words but saw no form; there was only a voice.
Psalm 97:2 – Clouds and thick darkness surround him; righteousness and justice are the
foundation of his throne.
Exodus 20:4 – “You shall not
make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven
above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below.
John 4:24 – God is spirit, and
his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”
Application:
- · The dark storm clouds that hide the sun and cast a veil across the sky are dramatic visual reminders that the fierce heat and brilliance of God’s naked glory must be veiled from creaturely eyes. Thus also a curtain closed off the Most Holy Place in the tabernacle and temple, veiling it in darkness.
- · Because God has no visible form, any idol intended to resemble Him would be a sinful misrepresentation of Him.
- · The place of worship is irrelevant, because true worship must be in keeping with God’s nature, which is spirit. “True worshipers” must worship God in the power of His Spirit and in accordance with truth.
