Judges
3:7-11 – And the
people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the Lord. They forgot the Lord their God and served the Baals and the Asheroth. Therefore the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel, and he sold them into the
hand of Cushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia. And the people of Israel served
Cushan-rishathaim eight years. But when the people of Israel cried out to the Lord, the Lord raised up a deliverer for the people
of Israel, who saved them, Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother. The Spirit of the Lord was upon him, and he judged Israel. He
went out to war, and the Lord gave Cushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia
into his hand. And his hand prevailed over Cushan-rishathaim. So the land had rest forty years. Then Othniel the son of Kenaz
died.
Judges

upon Jephthah, and he passed through Gilead and Manasseh and passed on to
Mizpah of Gilead, and from Mizpah of Gilead he passed on to the Ammonites.
Isaiah 11:2 – And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him,
the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might,
the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.
Judges 5:31 – “So may all
your enemies perish, O Lord! But your friends be like the sun as he
rises in his might.” And the land had
rest for forty years.
Application:
- · In the Old Testament the unique empowering of the Spirit was given to an individual primarily to enable him to carry out the special responsibilities God had given him.
- · The Messiah, like David, was empowered by the Holy Spirit. The Spirit endowed Him with the wisdom to undertake wise purposes and with the power to carry them out.
- · As Lord of the covenant and royal Head of His people Israel, The Lord demanded their love, just as kings in the ancient Near East demanded the love of their subjects.
