Judges
7:9-13 – That same night the Lord said to him, “Arise, go down against the
camp, for I have given it into your hand. But if you are afraid to go down, go down to the camp with Purah
your servant. And you shall hear what they say, and afterward your hands shall
be strengthened to go down against the camp.” Then he went down with
Purah his servant to the outposts of the armed men who were in the camp. And the Midianites and the Amalekites and all the people of the
East lay along the valley like locusts in abundance, and their camels were
without number, as the sand that is on the seashore in
abundance. When Gideon came, behold, a man was telling a dream to his
comrade. And he said, “Behold, I dreamed a dream, and behold, a cake of barley
bread tumbled into the camp of Midian and came to the tent and struck it so
that it fell and turned it upside down, so that the tent lay flat.”
Daniel
2:4,44-45 – Then the Chaldeans said to the king in Aramaic, “O king, live forever! Tell your servants the dream, and we
will show the interpretation.”…And in the days of those
kings the
God of heaven will set up a kingdom that shall never be destroyed, nor shall the kingdom be
left to another people. It shall break in pieces all these kingdoms and bring them to an
end, and it
shall stand forever, just as you saw that a stone was cut from
a mountain by no human hand, and that it broke in pieces the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver, and
the gold. A great God has made known to the king what shall be after this. The
dream is certain, and its interpretation sure.”
Daniel 4:23-25 – And because
the king saw a
watcher, a holy one, coming down from heaven and saying, ‘Chop down the tree and destroy it, but leave the stump of
its roots in the earth, bound with a band of iron and bronze, in the tender
grass of the field, and let him be wet with the dew of heaven, and let his
portion be with the beasts of the field, till seven periods of time pass over him,’ this
is the interpretation, O king: It is a decree of the Most High, which has come
upon my lord the king, that
you shall be driven from among men, and your dwelling shall be with the beasts
of the field. You shall be made to eat
grass like an ox, and you shall be wet with the dew of heaven, and seven periods of time shall pass over you, till you know that the Most High rules the kingdom of men and
gives it to whom he will.
Application:
- · Although revelations by dreams are frequently mentioned in the Old Testament, here in Judges both dreamer and interpreter are non-Israelite.
- · Joseph interpreted dreams in Egypt, and Daniel interpreted dreams in Babylon.
- · Since barley was considered an inferior grain and only one-half the value of wheat, it is a fitting symbol for Israel and Gideon, who were inferior in numbers.
