Light

John 12:45-49 – The one who looks at me is seeing the one who sent me. I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness. “If anyone hears my words but does not keep them, I do not judge that person. For I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world. There is a judge for the one who rejects me and does not accept my words; the very words I have spoken will condemn them at the last day. For I did not speak on my own, but the Father who sent me commanded me to say all that I have spoken.

John 1:4 – In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.

John 14:30-31 – I will not say much more to you, for the prince of this world is coming. He has no hold over me, but he comes so that the world may learn that I love the Father and do exactly what my Father has commanded me.

Application:

  • ·         The Gospel of John links light with Christ, from whom comes all spiritual illumination. He is the “light of the world”, who holds out wonderful hope for humanity and for the creation.
  • ·         It is not the purpose of the sun’s shining to cast shadows, but when the sun shines, shadows are inevitable.
  • ·         Jesus’ hearers have a great responsibility. His “words” are what the Father commanded Him to say. To reject them, therefore, is to reject God.
  • ·         Jesus had stressed the importance of His followers being obedient, and He set the example.
