It Is Not For Kings...To Drink Wine

Proverbs 31:4-8 – It is not for kings, Lemuel—it is not for kings to drink wine, not for rulers to crave beer, lest they drink and forget what has been decreed, and deprive all the oppressed of their rights. Let beer be for those who are perishing, wine for those who are in anguish! Let them drink and forget their poverty and remember their misery no more. Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute.

Proverbs 20:1 – Wine is a mocker and beer a brawler; whoever is led astray by them is not wise.

Isaiah 1:17 – Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow.

Application:

  • ·         Woe to the land whose rulers are drunkards.
  • ·         Those who overindulge in wine and beer become mockers and brawlers.
  • ·         Rulers were warned not to take advantage of the weak and oppressed.
