Proverbs 8:7-13 – My mouth speaks what is true, for
my lips detest wickedness. All the words of my mouth are just;
none of them is crooked or perverse. To the discerning all of
them are right; they are upright to those who have found knowledge.
Choose my instruction instead of silver, knowledge rather than choice
gold, for wisdom is more precious than rubies, and nothing you desire
can compare with her. “I, wisdom, dwell together with prudence;
I possess knowledge and discretion. To fear the Lord is to hate evil; I hate pride and arrogance, evil
behavior and perverse speech.
Proverbs
2:1-5 – My son, if you accept my words
and store up my commands within you, turning your ear to wisdom
and applying your heart to understanding—indeed, if you call out
for insight and cry aloud for understanding, and if you
look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure,
then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God.
Job 28:18,28 – Coral and jasper are not worthy of mention; the price of wisdom is
beyond rubies…And he said to the human race, “The fear of the Lord—that
is wisdom, and to shun evil is understanding.”
Genesis 22:12 – “Do not lay a
hand on the boy,” he said. “Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear
God, because you have not withheld from me your son,
your only son.”
Exodus 20:20 – Moses said to
the people, “Do not be afraid. God has come to test you,
so that the fear of God will be with you to keep you
from sinning.”
Proverbs 16:6 – Through love and faithfulness sin is atoned for; through
the fear of the Lord evil is avoided.
Application:
- · “Knowledge of God” involves having a personal relationship with God and knowing what He is teaching.
- · The value of a “wife of noble character”, who fears the Lord and is therefore wise.
- · Abraham’s “faith was made complete by what he did”.
- · Do not think that God’s display of His majesty is intended simply to fill you with abject fear. He has come to enter into covenant with you as your heavenly King.
- · “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom”.
- · When His people repent of sin and bring their lives into accord with His will, God forgives and withdraws His judgment. Thus it can be said that love and faithfulness, in a manner of speaking, atone for sin, i.e., they turn away God’s wrath against it.
