When Their Fathers Or Brothers Complain

Judges 21:20-22 – And they commanded the people of Benjamin, saying, “Go and lie in ambush in the vineyards and watch. If the daughters of Shiloh come out to dance in the dances, then come out of the vineyards and snatch each man his wife from the daughters of Shiloh, and go to the land of Benjamin. And when their fathers or their brothers come to complain to us, we will say to them, ‘Grant them graciously to us, because we did not take for each man of them his wife in battle, neither did you give them to them, else you would now be guilty.’”

Genesis 34:9,13,23 – Make marriages with us. Give your daughters to us, and take our daughters for yourselves…The sons of Jacob answered Shechem and his father Hamor deceitfully, because he had defiled their sister Dinah…Will not their livestock, their property and all their beasts be ours? Only let us agree with them, and they will dwell with us.”

2 Samuel 13:21,28 – When King David heard of all these things, he was very angry…Then Absalom commanded his servants, “Mark when Amnon's heart is merry with wine, and when I say to you, ‘Strike Amnon,’ then kill him. Do not fear; have I not commanded you? Be courageous and be valiant.”

Application:

  • ·         It was customary for the brothers of a girl who had been abducted to demand satisfaction.
  • ·         It was therefore important that the elders anticipate this response and be prepared to get cooperation from the girls’ families.
  • ·         Although David was incensed by Amnon’s treatment of Tamar, there is no record that he took any punitive action against him.
  • ·         David abdicated his responsibility both as king and as father.
  • ·         With the murder of Amnon, Absalom not only avenged his sister but also secured for himself the position of successor to the throne.
