John 1:5-7,12-13,15 –
The
light shines in the darkness, and
the darkness has not overcome it. There was a man sent from God whose name was John. He came as a witness to
testify concerning
that light, so that through him all might believe…Yet to all who did receive him, to
those who believed in his name, he gave
the right to become children of God—children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision
or a husband’s will, but born of God…(John testified concerning
him. He cried out, saying, “This is the one I spoke about when I said, ‘He who
comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’”)
John
20:31 – But these are written that
you may believe[a] that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of
God, and that by believing you may have life in his
name.
Application:
- · John the Baptist’s singular ministry was to testify about Jesus.
- · People were not to believe “in” John the Baptist but “through” him.
- · Membership in God’s family is by grace alone—the gift of God.
- · The whole Gospel of John is written to show the truth of Jesus’ Messiahship and to present Him as the Son of God, so that the readers may believe in Him.
