1 Samuel 16:8-12 – Then Jesse called Abinadab and had him pass in front of Samuel. But
Samuel said, “The Lord has not chosen this one either.” Jesse then had Shammah pass by, but Samuel said, “Nor has the Lord chosen this one.” Jesse had seven of his sons pass before Samuel, but Samuel said
to him, “The Lord has not chosen these.” So he asked Jesse, “Are
these all the sons you have?” “There is still the youngest,”
Jesse answered. “He is tending the sheep.” Samuel said, “Send for him;
we will not sit down until he arrives.” So he sent for him and had him brought in. He
was glowing with health and had a fine appearance and handsome features. Then the Lord said, “Rise and anoint him; this is the
one.”
Genesis 37:2 – This is the account of Jacob’s family line. Joseph, a young man of seventeen, was tending the flocks with his brothers, the sons of Bilhah and the sons of Zilpah, his father’s wives, and he brought their
father a bad report about them.
Psalm 78:72 – And David
shepherded them with integrity of heart; with skillful hands he led them.
Genesis 39:6 – So Potiphar left
everything he had in Joseph’s care; with Joseph in charge, he did not
concern himself with anything except the food he ate.
Application:
- · Joseph represented a people who struggled with both God and human beings and overcame and a people who were a source of blessing to the nations.
- · Israel under the care of the Lord’s royal shepherd from the house of David was for the prophets the hope of God’s people.
- · Joseph came to hold the welfare of his “world” in his hands—but always by the blessing and overruling of God, never by his own wits, as his father Jacob had so long attempted.
