The Lord Himself Will Establish A House For You

2 Samuel 7:8-11,16 – Now, therefore, thus you shall say to my servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, that you should be prince over my people Israel. And I have been with you wherever you went and have cut off all your enemies from before you. And I will make for you a great name, like the name of the great ones of the earth. And I will appoint a place for my people Israel and will plant them, so that they may dwell in their own place and be disturbed no more. And violent men shall afflict them no more, as formerly, from the time that I appointed judges over my people Israel. And I will give you rest from all your enemies. Moreover, the Lord declares to you that the Lord will make you a houseAnd your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me. Your throne shall be established forever.’”

Psalm 78:72 – With upright heart he shepherded them and guided them with his skillful hand.

Luke 1:32-33 – He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”

2 Timothy 2:8-9 – Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, the offspring of David, as preached in my gospel, for which I am suffering, bound with chains as a criminal. But the word of God is not bound!

Isaiah 9:1-2,6-7 – But there will be no gloom for her who was in anguish. In the former time he brought into contempt the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the latter time he has made glorious the way of the sea, the land beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations. The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone…For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.

Application:

  • ·         Israel under the care of the Lord’s royal shepherd from the house of David was for the prophets the hope of God’s people.
  • ·         God says that David is not to build Him a house; rather, God will build David a house that will last forever.
  • ·         The throne was promised in the Old Testament to the Messiah descended from David.
  • ·         Although Christ’s role as mediator will one day be finished, the kingdom of the Father and Son, as one, will never end.
  • ·         Christ’s resurrection proclaims His deity, and His descent from David shows His humanity; both truths are basic to the gospel.
  • ·         The promise of an everlasting kingdom for the house of David became the focal point for many later prophecies and powerfully influenced the development of the Messianic hope in Israel.
  • ·         Since Christ is God, His death has infinite value; since He is man, He could rightfully become our substitute.
  • ·         Jesus and His salvation would be a “light for the Gentiles”.
  • ·         As Wonderful Counselor, the coming Son of David will carry out a royal program that will cause all the world to marvel.
  • ·         In spite of the sins of kings like Ahaz, Christ will be a descendant of David who will rule in righteousness forever.
