Your Throne Weill Be Established Forever

·     2 Samuel 7:10-12,16 – And I will provide a place for my people Israel and will plant them so that they can have a home of their own and no longer be disturbed. Wicked people will not oppress them anymore, as they did at the beginning and have done ever since the time I appointed leaders over my people Israel. I will also give you rest from all your enemies. “‘The Lord declares to you that the Lord himself will establish a house for you: When your days are over and you rest with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, your own flesh and blood, and I will establish his kingdom…Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me; your throne will be established forever.’”

Luke 1:32-33 – He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.”

Application:

  • ·         The promise of an everlasting kingdom for the house of David became the focal point for many later prophecies and powerfully influenced the development of the Messianic hope in Israel.
  • ·         Although Christ’s role as mediator will one day be finished, the kingdom of the Father and Son, as one, will never end.
  • ·         David’s victories over threatening powers will be complete, so that the rest already enjoyed will be assured for the future. God says that David is not to build Him a house; rather, God will build David a house that will last forever.

My Love

2 Samuel 7:14-15 – I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son. When he commits iniquity, I will discipline him with the rod of men, with the stripes of the sons of men, but my steadfast love will not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away from before you.

1 Kings 2:1-4 – When David's time to die drew near, he commanded Solomon his son, saying, “I am about to go the way of all the earth. Be strong, and show yourself a man, and keep the charge of the Lord your God, walking in his ways and keeping his statutes, his commandments, his rules, and his testimonies, as it is written in the Law of Moses, that you may prosper in all that you do and wherever you turn, that the Lord may establish his word that he spoke concerning me, saying, ‘If your sons pay close attention to their way, to walk before me in faithfulness with all their heart and with all their soul, you shall not lack a man on the throne of Israel.’

Jeremiah 33:17-18 – “For thus says the Lord: David shall never lack a man to sit on the throne of the house of Israel, and the Levitical priests shall never lack a man in my presence to offer burnt offerings, to burn grain offerings, and to make sacrifices forever.”

Psalm 6:4 – Turn, O Lord, deliver my life; save me for the sake of your steadfast love.

Application:

  • ·         “My love” is God’s special and unfailing favor.
  • ·         It was only in the coming of Christ that the fallen tent of David would be restored and the promise of David’s eternal dynasty ultimately fulfilled.
  • ·         David will never fail to have a man to sit on the throne of the house of Israel is fulfilled ultimately in Jesus.
  • ·         Appeal to God’s “love, kindness, mercy” is frequent in the Old Testament since it summarizes all that the Lord covenanted to show to Israel as well as to David and his dynasty.

His Father...My Son

·       2 Samuel 7:14-15 – I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son. When he commits iniquity, I will discipline him with the rod of men, with the stripes of the sons of men, but my steadfast love will not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away from before you.

Hebrews 12:7 – It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline?

Proverbs 13:24 – Whoever spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is diligent to discipline him.

Psalm 45:6-9 – Your throne, O God, is forever and ever. The scepter of your kingdom is a scepter of uprightness; you have loved righteousness and hated wickedness. Therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness beyond your companions; your robes are all fragrant with myrrh and aloes and cassia. From ivory palaces stringed instruments make you glad; daughters of kings are among your ladies of honor; at your right hand stands the queen in gold of Ophir.

Application:

  • ·         God promises to establish on David’s throne a descendant of David. In Jesus Christ this promise comes to ultimate fulfillment.
  • ·         God’s discipline is evidence that we are His children. Far from being a reason for despair, discipline is a basis for encouragement and perseverance.
  • ·         Discipline is rooted in love.
  • ·         In Christ, the Son of David, God’s covenant is fulfilled.

  • ·         King David’s dynasty will last forever, and Jerusalem will be inhabited for all time, if the people of Judah obey the Lord—and they will.
  • ·         Jesus ultimately fulfills the passage, “David will never fail to have a man to sit on the throne of the house of Israel”
  • ·         For the benefit of the saints, God and the Messiah will rule.

And I will make for you a great name, like the name of the great ones of the earth. And I will appoint a place for my people Israel and will plant them, so that they may dwell in their own place and be disturbed no more. And violent men shall afflict them no more, as formerly, from the time that I appointed judges over my people Israel. And I will give you rest from all your enemies. Moreover, the Lord declares to you that the Lord will make you a houseAnd your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me. Your throne shall be established forever.’”

The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone…For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. • ·         Since Christ is God, His death has infinite value; since He is man, He could rightfully become our substitute.
  • ·         Jesus and His salvation would be a “light for the Gentiles”.
  • ·         As Wonderful Counselor, the coming Son of David will carry out a royal program that will cause all the world to marvel.
  • ·         In spite of the sins of kings like Ahaz, Christ will be a descendant of David who will rule in righteousness forever.

House

2 Samuel 7:3-7 – And Nathan said to the king, “Go, do all that is in your heart, for the Lord is with you.” But that same night the word of the Lord came to Nathan, “Go and tell my servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord: Would you build me a house to dwell in? I have not lived in a house since the day I brought up the people of Israel from Egypt to this day, but I have been moving about in a tent for my dwelling. In all places where I have moved with all the people of Israel, did I speak a word with any of the judges of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd my people Israel, saying, “Why have you not built me a house of cedar?”’

1 Kings 5:5 – And so I intend to build a house for the name of the Lord my God, as the Lord said to David my father, ‘Your son, whom I will set on your throne in your place, shall build the house for my name.’

  • ·         Solomon realized that God could not be localized in a man-made temple, magnificent though it may be.

Nathan

2 Samuel 6:22-7:2,10-11 – I will make myself yet more contemptible than this, and I will be abased in your eyes. But by the female servants of whom you have spoken, by them I shall be held in honor.” And Michal the daughter of Saul had no child to the day of her death. Now when the king lived in his house and the Lord had given him rest from all his surrounding enemies, the king said to Nathan the prophet, “See now, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells in a tent.” And I will appoint a place for my people Israel and will plant them, so that they may dwell in their own place and be disturbed no more. And violent men shall afflict them no more, as formerly, from the time that I appointed judges over my people Israel. And I will give you rest from all your enemies. Moreover, the Lord declares to you that the Lord will make you a house.

2 Samuel 12:13-14 – David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the Lord.” And Nathan said to David, “The Lord also has put away your sin; you shall not die. Nevertheless, because by this deed you have utterly scorned the Lord, the child who is born to you shall die.”

Application:

  • ·         It is God’s building that affects His kingdom.
  • ·         David recognizes his guilt and confesses his sin in response to Nathan’s rebuke.
  • ·         David is required to suffer the disciplinary results of his sin in a manner open to public view.

He Blessed The People

2 Samuel 6:15-21 – So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the Lord with shouting and with the sound of the horn. As the ark of the Lord came into the city of David, Michal the daughter of Saul looked out of the window and saw King David leaping and dancing before the Lord, and she despised him in her heart. And they brought in the ark of the Lord and set it in its place, inside the tent that David had pitched for it. And David offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the Lord. And when David had finished offering the burnt offerings and the peace offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the Lord of hosts and distributed among all the people, the whole multitude of Israel, both men and women, a cake of bread, a portion of meat, and a cake of raisins to each one. Then all the people departed, each to his house. And David returned to bless his household. But Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David and said, “How the king of Israel honored himself today, uncovering himself today before the eyes of his servants' female servants, as one of the vulgar fellows shamelessly uncovers himself!” And David said to Michal, “It was before the Lord, who chose me above your father and above all his house, to appoint me as prince over Israel, the people of the Lord—and I will celebrate before the Lord.

Exodus 39:43 – And Moses saw all the work, and behold, they had done it; as the Lord had commanded, so had they done it. Then Moses blessed them.

1 Kings 8:57-58 – The Lord our God be with us, as he was with our fathers. May he not leave us or forsake us, that he may incline our hearts to him, to walk in all his ways and to keep his commandments, his statutes, and his rules, which he commanded our fathers.

Micah 5:2 – But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose coming forth is from of old, from ancient days.

Application:

  • ·         Moses blessed them for the faithfulness with which the Israelites had donated their gifts, time and talents in building the tabernacle and all its furnishings—faithfulness in service brings divine benediction.
  • ·         Solomon asks for a divine work of grace within his people that will enable them to be faithful to the covenant.
  • ·         The ruler will be ultimately Christ, who will rule for God the Father.

David Was Afraid Of The Lord

2 Samuel 6:8-14 – And David was angry because the Lord had broken out against Uzzah. And that place is called Perez-uzzah to this day. And David was afraid of the Lord that day, and he said, “How can the ark of the Lord come to me?” So David was not willing to take the ark of the Lord into the city of David. But David took it aside to the house of Obed-edom the Gittite. And the ark of the Lord remained in the house of Obed-edom the Gittite three months, and the Lord blessed Obed-edom and all his household. And it was told King David, “The Lord has blessed the household of Obed-edom and all that belongs to him, because of the ark of God.” So David went and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obed-edom to the city of David with rejoicing. And when those who bore the ark of the Lord had gone six steps, he sacrificed an ox and a fattened animal. And David danced before the Lord with all his might. And David was wearing a linen ephod.

Joshua 24:14 – “Now therefore fear the Lord and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness. Put away the gods that your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord.

Genesis 30:27 – But Laban said to him, “If I have found favor in your sight, I have learned by divination that the Lord has blessed me because of you.

Exodus 19:5-6 – Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession among all peoples, for all the earth is mine; and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. These are the words that you shall speak to the people of Israel.”

Application:

  • ·         Fear the Lord means to trust, serve and worship Him.
  • ·         Divination was strictly forbidden to Israel because it reflected a pagan concept of the world controlled by evil forces, and therefore obviously not under the sovereign rule of the Lord.
  • ·         Israel was to constitute the Lord’s kingdom and, like priests, was to be wholly consecrated to His service. God’s people, both individually and collectively, are to be “set apart” to do His will.
