Leviticus 24:21-25:7 –
Whoever kills an animal must make restitution, but
whoever kills a human being is to be put to death. You are to have the
same law for the foreigner and the native-born. I am the Lord your God.’” Then Moses spoke
to the Israelites, and they took the blasphemer outside the camp and stoned
him. The Israelites did as the Lord commanded
Moses. The Lord said to
Moses at Mount Sinai, “Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘When you
enter the land I am going to give you, the land itself must observe a sabbath
to the Lord. For six
years sow your fields, and for six years prune your vineyards and gather their
crops. But in the seventh year the land is to have a year of sabbath rest, a
sabbath to the Lord. Do not
sow your fields or prune your vineyards. Do not reap what grows of itself or
harvest the grapes of your untended vines. The land is to have a year
of rest. Whatever the land yields during the sabbath year will be food for
you—for yourself, your male and female servants, and the hired worker and
temporary resident who live among you, as well as for your livestock and
the wild animals in your land. Whatever the land produces may be eaten.
Ezekiel
47:22 – You are to allot it as an
inheritance for yourselves and for the foreigners residing
among you and who have children. You are to consider them as native-born
Israelites; along with you they are to be allotted an inheritance among the
tribes of Israel.
Deuteronomy 15:11 – There will
always be poor people in the land. Therefore I command you
to be openhanded toward your fellow Israelites who are poor and needy in your
land.
Application:
- · The care for the poor in the laws of Israel is noteworthy.
- · Even in the best of societies under the most enlightened laws, the uncertainties of life and the variations among citizens result in some people becoming poor. In such cases the Lord commands that generosity and kindness be extended to them.
