Understanding

Job 8:8-13 – “Ask the former generation and find out what their ancestors learned, for we were born only yesterday and know nothing, and our days on earth are but a shadow. Will they not instruct you and tell you? Will they not bring forth words from their understanding? Can papyrus grow tall where there is no marsh? Can reeds thrive without water? While still growing and uncut, they wither more quickly than grass. Such is the destiny of all who forget God; so perishes the hope of the godless.

Proverbs 2:1-5 – My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you, turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding—indeed, if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God.

Job 13:16 – Indeed, this will turn out for my deliverance, for no godless person would dare come before him!

Application:

  • ·         “Our days…are but a shadow” was a common theme in wisdom literature.
  • ·         “Store up…within you” just as the psalmist hid God’s word in his heart to avoid sin.
  • ·         This will turn out for my deliverance.
