silences the lips of trusted advisers and takes away the discernment of
elders. He pours contempt on nobles and disarms the mighty.

Psalm
107:39-40 – Then
their numbers decreased, and they were humbled by
oppression, calamity and sorrow; he who pours contempt on nobles
made them wander in a trackless waste.
Jeremiah
25:9 – I will summon all the peoples of the north and my servant Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon,” declares the Lord, “and I will bring them against this land and its
inhabitants and against all the surrounding nations. I will completely destroy them and make them an object of horror
and scorn, and an everlasting ruin.
Application:
- · In their prosperity the people, led by their nobles, grow proud and turn their backs on the God who has blessed them, so He returns them to the desert.
- · God knows even plans conceived and held in secret.
- · “Servant” is used here not in the sense of “worshiper” but of “vassal” or “agent of judgment”, just as the pagan ruler Cyrus is called the Lord’s “shepherd” and His “anointed”.
