1 Samuel 9:14-16 – They went up to the town, and as they were
entering it, there was Samuel, coming toward them on his way up to the high
place. Now the day before Saul came, the Lord had revealed this to Samuel: “About this time tomorrow I will send you a man from the land
of Benjamin. Anoint him ruler over my people Israel; he will deliver them from the hand of the Philistines. I have looked on my people, for their cry has reached me.”

Samuel 12:3 – Here I stand. Testify
against me in the presence of the Lord and
his anointed. Whose ox have I taken? Whose donkey have
I taken? Whom have I cheated? Whom have I oppressed? From whose hand have I
accepted a bribe to make me shut my eyes? If I have
done any of these things, I will make it right.”
Psalm 2:2-3 – The kings of the earth rise up and the rulers band together
against the Lord and against his anointed, saying, “Let us break their chains and
throw off their shackles.”
Leviticus 4:3 – “‘If the
anointed priest sins, bringing guilt on the people, he must
bring to the Lord a
young bull without defect as
a sin offering for the sin
he has committed.

Samuel 2:9-10 – He will guard the feet of his faithful servants, but
the wicked will be silenced in the place of darkness. “It is not
by strength that one prevails; those who oppose the Lord will be broken. The
Most High will thunder from heaven; the Lord will judge the ends of the earth.
“He will give strength to his king and exalt the horn of his anointed.”
Zechariah 4:14 – So he said,
“These are the two who are anointed to serve the Lord of all the earth.”
Isaiah 61:1-3 – The Spirit of the
Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the
poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for
the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn, and provide for those who grieve in
Zion—to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a
garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They
will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the Lord
for the display of his splendor.
Application:
- · When Samuel presents the newly inaugurated king to the people, he seeks to establish publicly his own past faithfulness to the covenant as leader of the nation.
- · To rebel against the Lord’s anointed is also to rebel against the One who anointed him. Anointed refers to the Davidic king and is ultimately fulfilled in Christ. The English word “Messiah” comes from the Hebrew word for “anointed one”, and the English word “Christ” from the Greek word for “anointed one”.
- · Anointed priest was the high priest. As soon as an “anointed priest” became aware of unintentional sin, he was to bring his sin offering to the Lord.
- · The Lord’s anointed—i.e., His anointed king. Anointed is often synonymous with “king” and provides part of the vocabulary basis for the Messianic idea in the Bible. “Anointed” and “Messiah” are of the same Hebrew word. The Greek translation of anointed is Christos, from which comes the English word “Christ”.
- · “Two…anointed” were Zerubbabel, from the royal line of David, and Joshua, the priest. The oil used in anointing symbolizes the Holy Spirit.
- · “Spirit…is on me” may refer to Isaiah in a limited sense, but the Messianic servant is the main figure intended.
