1 Samuel 4:15-18 – Eli heard the outcry and asked, “What is
the meaning of this uproar?” The man hurried over to Eli, who was ninety-eight years
old and whose eyes had failed so that he could not see. He told Eli, “I have just
come from the battle line; I fled from it this very day.” Eli asked,
“What happened, my son?” The man who brought the news replied, “Israel
fled before the Philistines, and the army has suffered heavy losses. Also your
two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God has been captured.”
When he mentioned the ark of God, Eli fell backward off his chair by the side
of the gate. His neck was broken and he died, for he was an old man, and he was
heavy. He had led Israel forty years.
Psalm
78:61 – He sent the
ark of his might into captivity, his splendor into
the hands of the enemy.
Joshua 24:31 – Israel served
the Lord throughout
the lifetime of Joshua and of the elders who outlived him and who had experienced everything the Lord had done for Israel.

Samuel 7:11 – And I will provide a place for my people
Israel and will plant them so that they can have a home of their own and no longer be
disturbed. Wicked people will not oppress them anymore, as they did at the beginning and have
done ever since the time I appointed leaders over my people Israel. I will
also give you rest from all your enemies. “‘The Lord declares to you that the Lord himself will establish a house for you: When your days are over and you rest with your ancestors, I will raise
up your offspring to succeed you, your own flesh and blood, and I will establish his kingdom.
Application:
- · The ark is called his might and splendor because it was the sign of God’s kingship in Israel and the focal point for the display of His power and glory.
- · The death of Eli marked the end of an era that had begun with the deaths of Joshua and the elders who served with him. Incapable of restraining Israel or his sons from their wicked ways, and weakened and blinded by age, the old priest is an apt symbol of the flawed age now coming to its tragic close.
- · It is God’s building that effects His kingdom.
