Samuel 2:23-25 – So
he said to them, “Why do you do such things? I hear from all the people about
these wicked deeds of yours. No, my sons;
the report I hear spreading among the Lord’s people is not good. If one person
sins against another, God may mediate for the offender; but if
anyone sins against the Lord, who will intercede for them?” His sons,
however, did not listen to their father’s rebuke, for it was the Lord’s will to put them to death.
Job 9:33-34 – If only
there were someone to mediate between us, someone to bring us together,
someone to remove God’s rod from me, so that his terror would frighten
me no more.
Isaiah 1:18 – “Come
now, let us settle the matter,” says the Lord. “Though your sins are like scarlet, they
shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson,
they shall be like wool.
Hebrews 10:26-27 – If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, but only a fearful expectation of judgment
and of raging fire that will
consume the enemies of God.
Psalm
82:1-2 – God presides in the great assembly; he
renders judgment among the “gods”: “How long will you defend the unjust and show
partiality to the wicked?
Application:
- · Eli rebuked his sons but did not remove them from office. God would do that.
- · God is so immense that Job feels he needs someone who can help him, someone who can argue his case in court. Job’s call is not directly predicting the mediatorship of Christ, for Job is not looking for one to forgive him but for one who can testify to his innocence.
- · “White as snow” was a powerful figurative description of the result of forgiveness. This offer of forgiveness is conditioned on the reformation of life called for.
- · To reject Christ’s sacrifice for sins is to reject the only sacrifice; there is no other.
- · In the language of the Old Testament—and in accordance with the conceptual world of the ancient Near East—rulers and judges, as deputies of the heavenly King, could be given the honorific title “god” or be called “son of God”.
