Deuteronomy 27:16-24 –
“Cursed is anyone who dishonors
their father or mother.” Then all the people shall say, “Amen!” “Cursed
is anyone who moves their neighbor’s boundary stone.” Then all the
people shall say, “Amen!” “Cursed is anyone who leads the blind astray
on the road.” Then all the people shall say, “Amen!” “Cursed is
anyone who withholds justice from the foreigner, the fatherless or the widow.” Then
all the people shall say, “Amen!” “Cursed is anyone who sleeps with his
father’s wife, for he dishonors his father’s bed.” Then all the people
shall say, “Amen!” “Cursed is anyone who has sexual relations with any
animal.” Then all the people shall say, “Amen!” “Cursed is anyone
who sleeps with his sister, the daughter of his father or the daughter of his
mother.” Then all the people shall say, “Amen!” “Cursed is anyone
who sleeps with his mother-in-law.” Then all the people shall say,
“Amen!” “Cursed is anyone who kills their neighbor secretly.” Then all
the people shall say, “Amen!”
Exodus 20:12-13 – “Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you. “You shall
not murder.
Genesis 4:23 – Lamech said to his wives, “Adah and
Zillah, listen to me; wives of Lamech, hear my words. I
have killed a man for wounding me, a young man for injuring me.
Application:
- · Honor means (1) prize highly, (2) care for, (3) show respect for, and (4) obey. Honoring those in authority is essential for social stability.
- · “Killed a man for wounding me” was violent and wanton destruction of human life by one who proclaimed his complete independence from God by taking vengeance with his own hands.
- · The Hebrew for murder usually refers to a premeditated and deliberate act.
