Deuteronomy 19:20-20:1
– The rest of the people will hear of this and be
afraid, and never again will such an evil thing be done among you. Show
no pity: life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot
for foot. When you go to war against your enemies and see horses and chariots
and an army greater than yours, do not be afraid of them, because
the Lord your God, who
brought you up out of Egypt, will be with you.
Leviticus
24:20 – Anyone who
injures their neighbor is to be injured in the same manner: fracture for fracture, eye for
eye, tooth for tooth. The one who has inflicted the injury must
suffer the same injury.
Numbers
14:9 – Only do not rebel against
the Lord. And do not be afraid of
the people of the land, because we will devour them. Their
protection is gone, but the Lord is
with us. Do not be afraid of them.”
Deuteronomy
3:22 – Do not be afraid of
them; the Lord your
God himself will fight for you.”
1
Samuel 17:45 – David said to the
Philistine, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but
I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of
Israel, whom you have defied.
Application:
- · “Life for life” represents a statement of principle: The penalty is to fit the crime, not exceed it.
- · There are no walls, no fortifications, no factors of size or bearing, and certainly no gods that can withstand the onslaught of God’s people when the Lord is with them.
- · The Lord’s power, not Israel’s unaided strength, achieved victory.
- · David’s strength was his reliance on the Lord.
