Do Not Be Fainthearted

Deuteronomy 20:2-3 – When you are about to go into battle, the priest shall come forward and address the army. He shall say: “Hear, Israel: Today you are going into battle against your enemies. Do not be fainthearted or afraid; do not panic or be terrified by them.

2 Chronicles 20:20 – Early in the morning they left for the Desert of Tekoa. As they set out, Jehoshaphat stood and said, “Listen to me, Judah and people of Jerusalem! Have faith in the Lord your God and you will be upheld; have faith in his prophets and you will be successful.

1 Samuel 17:32 – David said to Saul, “Let no one lose heart on account of this Philistine; your servant will go and fight him.”

Deuteronomy 4:1 – Now, Israel, hear the decrees and laws I am about to teach you. Follow them so that you may live and may go in and take possession of the land the Lord, the God of your ancestors, is giving you.

Application:

  • ·         2 Chronicles was most likely written during the exile. “Have faith in the Lord your God and…in His prophets” was a particularly apt word to hear from Jehoshaphat—at a time when their only hope for the future lay with the Lord and the reassuring words of His prophets.
  • ·         David’s confidence rested not in his own prowess but in the power of the living God, whose honor had been violated by the Philistines and whose covenant promises had been scorned by the Israelites.
  • ·         God’s call to His people to hear and obey is a frequent theme in His Word.
