Last Words Of David

2 Samuel 23:1-2 – These are the last words of David: “The inspired utterance of David son of Jesse, the utterance of the man exalted by the Most High, the man anointed by the God of Jacob, the hero of Israel’s songs: “The Spirit of the Lord spoke through me; his word was on my tongue.

1 Samuel 2:9-10 – He will guard the feet of his faithful servants, but the wicked will be silenced in the place of darkness. “It is not by strength that one prevails; those who oppose the Lord will be broken. The Most High will thunder from heaven; the Lord will judge the ends of the earth. “He will give strength to his king and exalt the horn of his anointed.”

Psalm 18:50 – He gives his king great victories; he shows unfailing love to his anointed, to David and to his descendants forever.

Isaiah 45:1-2 – “This is what the Lord says to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I take hold of to subdue nations before him and to strip kings of their armor, to open doors before him so that gates will not be shut: I will go before you and will level the mountains; I will break down gates of bronze and cut through bars of iron.

1 Kings 2:2-4 – “I am about to go the way of all the earth,” he said. “So be strong, act like a man, and observe what the Lord your God requires: Walk in obedience to him, and keep his decrees and commands, his laws and regulations, as written in the Law of Moses. Do this so that you may prosper in all you do and wherever you go and that the Lord may keep his promise to me: ‘If your descendants watch how they live, and if they walk faithfully before me with all their heart and soul, you will never fail to have a successor on the throne of Israel.’

Application:

  • ·         The first reference in the Bible to the Lord’s anointed—i.e., His anointed king—is found in Hannah’s prayer.
  • ·         David views himself as the Lord’s chosen and anointed king.
  • ·         “Messiah” comes from the Hebrew for anointed. Cyrus, a foreign emperor, is called “His anointed” just as he is called “my shepherd”, because God has appointed him to carry out a divine commission in his role as king. The servant—Christ—is called “the Anointed One”.
  • ·         “Walk in obedience to Him” was a characteristic expression of Deuteronomy for obedience to covenant obligations.
  • ·         Both Solomon and his descendants fell short of their covenant obligations.
