1 Chronicles 17:15-19
– In accordance with all these
words, and in accordance with all this vision, Nathan spoke to David. Then
King David went in and sat before the Lord and said, “Who am I, O Lord God, and what is my house, that you have
brought me thus far? And this was a small thing in your eyes, O God. You have also
spoken of your servant's house for a great while to come, and have shown me
future generations, O Lord God! And what more can David
say to you for honoring your servant? For you know your servant. For your servant's sake, O Lord, and according to your own heart, you
have done all this greatness, in making known all these great things.

Kings 19:4 – But he himself went a
day's journey into the wilderness and came and sat down under a broom tree. And he asked that he might die, saying, “It is enough; now, O Lord, take away my life, for I am no better than my fathers.”

Samuel 7:16 – And your house and
your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me. Your throne shall be established forever.’”
Isaiah
9:7 – Of the increase
of his government and of peace there will be no end, on
the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold
it with justice and with righteousness from this time
forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.
Isaiah
55:3 – Incline your
ear, and come to me; hear, that your soul may live; and I
will make with you an everlasting covenant, my steadfast, sure love for David.
Application:
- · Elijah concluded that his work was fruitless and consequently that life was not worth living. He had lost his confidence in the triumph of the kingdom of God and was withdrawing from the arena of conflict.
- · The promise of an everlasting kingdom for the house of David became the focal point for many later prophecies and powerfully influenced the development of the Messianic hope in Israel.
- · God will not abandon His people.
- · David had been promised an unending dynasty, one that would culminate in the Messiah. Christ’s resurrection is proof of God’s faithfulness to David.
