1
Chronicles 17:13-14 – I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son. I will not take
my steadfast love from him, as I took it from him who was before you, but I will
confirm him in my house and in my kingdom forever, and his throne shall be
established forever.’”
Luke 1:32-33 – He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”
2 Samuel 7:14-16 – I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son. When
he commits iniquity, I will
discipline him with the rod of men, with the stripes of the sons of men, but my steadfast love will not depart from
him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away from
before you. And your house and your kingdom shall be made
sure forever before me. Your throne shall be established forever.’”
Jeremiah 33:17-18 – “For thus says the Lord: David
shall never lack a man to sit on the throne of the house of Israel, and the Levitical priests shall never lack a
man in my presence to offer burnt offerings, to burn grain offerings, and to
make sacrifices forever.”
Application:
- · The Son of the Most High has two senses: (1) the divine Son of God and (2) the Messiah born in time. Mary was a descendant of David, as was Joseph; so Jesus could rightly be called a “son” of David.
- · God promises to maintain a special relationship with the descendant of David whom He will establish on David’s throne. It marks him as the one God has chosen and enthroned to rule in His name as the official representative of God’s rule over His people. In Jesus Christ this promise comes to ultimate fulfillment.
- · “David will never fail to have a man to sit on the throne of the house of Israel”. This passage is fulfilled ultimately in Jesus.
- · The promise of an everlasting kingdom for the house of David became the focal point for many later prophecies and powerfully influenced the development of the Messianic hope in Israel.
