Leviticus
18:2-4 - “Speak to
the Israelites and say to them: ‘I am the Lord your God. You must not do as they do in Egypt, where you used to live, and
you must not do as they do in the land of Canaan, where I am bringing you. Do
not follow their practices. You must obey my laws and be careful to follow
my decrees. I am the Lord your God.
Genesis 17:7 – I will establish
my covenant as an everlasting covenant between
me and you and your descendants after you for the generations to come, to be
your God and the God of your descendants after you.
Deuteronomy 18:9 – When you enter
the land the Lord your
God is giving you, do not learn to imitate the
detestable ways of the nations there.
Deuteronomy 4:1 – Now, Israel,
hear the decrees and laws I am about to teach you.
Follow them so that you may live and may go in and take possession of
the land the Lord, the God of your ancestors, is giving you.
1 Kings 11:11 – So the Lord said
to Solomon, “Since this is your attitude and you have not kept my covenant and
my decrees, which I commanded you, I will most certainly tear the
kingdom away from you and give it to one of your subordinates.
Application:
- · “To be your God” is the heart of God’s covenant promise, repeated over and over in the Old Testament.
- · The people were not to resort to detestable sources for their information, guidance or revelation. Rather, they were to listen to the Lord’s true prophets.
- · God’s call to His people to hear and obey is a frequent theme in the Old Testament.
- · Solomon had broken the most basic demands of the covenant and thereby severely undermined the entire covenant relationship between God and His people.
