Leviticus
11:45 – For I am the Lord who brought
you up out of the land of Egypt to be your God. You shall therefore be holy,
for I am holy.”
Genesis 17:7 – And I will establish
my covenant between me and you and your offspring after you throughout their
generations for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your offspring
after you.
Exodus 19:5-6 – Now therefore, if you
will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured
possession among all peoples, for all the earth is mine; and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.
These are the words that you shall speak to the people of Israel.”
1 Peter 1:14-16 – As obedient children,
do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your
conduct, since it is
written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”
Application:
- · The covenant was everlasting from God’s standpoint, but capable of being broken from man’s standpoint. To be your God is the heart of God’s covenant promise, repeated over and over in the Old Testament. This is God’s pledge to be the protector of His people and the One who provides for their well-being and guarantees their future blessing.
- · God’s people, both individually and collectively, are to be set apart to do His will.
- · To be holy is to be set apart—set apart from sin and impurity, and set apart to God.
