Romans 12:6-8 - Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.
1 Corinthians 12:28 - And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, helping, administrating, and various kinds of tongues.
Acts 15:32 - And Judas and Silas, who were themselves prophets, encouraged and strengthened the brothers with many words.
1 Timothy 5:17 - Let the elders who rule well be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in preaching and teaching.
Application:
· The apostles and prophets were part of the foundation of the church, and teaching was associated with the pastoral office.
· Encouraging is exhorting others with an uplifting, cheerful call to worthwhile accomplishment. In teaching, the believer is shown what he must do; in encouraging, he is helped to do it. Let him govern is possibly a reference to an elder.
· One of the primary functions of prophets in the early church was to encourage and strengthen the brothers.
· All elders were to exercise leadership and to teach and preach, and all were to receive honor.
