See Me

John 16:14-16 – He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.” Jesus went on to say, “In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me.”

John 14:19,21,23 – Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live…Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them.”… Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.

Application:

  • ·         The Spirit draws no attention to Himself but promotes the glory of Christ.
  • ·         The cross separated the world from the disciples.
  • ·         Love for Christ and keeping His commands cannot be separated.
  • ·         Love and obedience are linked.

Because The Prince Of This World Now Stands Condemned

John 16:8-13 – When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: about sin, because people do not believe in me; about righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; and about judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned. “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.

John 12:31 – Now is the time for judgment on this world; now the prince of this world will be driven out.

John 14:16-17,26 – And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever—the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you…But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.

Application:

  • ·         “Prince Of This World” is Satan.
  • ·         To live out Christ’s teaching requires the enabling presence of the Spirit.
  • ·         All three persons of the Trinity are linked with truth.
  • ·         Both the Father and the Son are involved in the sending.

About Righteousness

John 16:8-11 – When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: about sin, because people do not believe in me; about righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; and about judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.

Romans 3:22-24 – This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.

Application:

  • ·         “About righteousness” was the righteousness brought about by Christ’s sacrificial death.
  • ·         “The glory of God” is what God intended humans to be.
  • ·         Christ’s righteousness will be credited to believers as their own.

Advocate

John 16:4-11 – I have told you this, so that when their time comes you will remember that I warned you about them. I did not tell you this from the beginning because I was with you, but now I am going to him who sent me. None of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ Rather, you are filled with grief because I have said these things. But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: about sin, because people do not believe in me; about righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; and about judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.

  • ·         “About righteousness” was the righteousness brought about by Christ’s sacrificial death.
  • ·         The Spirit will always stand by Christ’s people.
  • ·         Both the Father and the Son are involved in the sending.

Or Me

John 16:3 – They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me.

John 15:21 – They will treat you this way because of my name, for they do not know the one who sent me.

John 14:11 – Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves.

John 17:22-23 – I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one—I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.

Application:

  • ·         Again the Father and the Son are linked.
  • ·         Because Christians do not belong to the world, persecution from the world is inevitable.
  • ·         Faith includes believing that Jesus is one with the Father.
  • ·         Again the emphasis on unity has an evangelistic aim.

You Also

John 15:21,27-16:2 – They will treat you this way because of my name, for they do not know the one who sent me…And you also must testify, for you have been with me from the beginning. “All this I have told you so that you will not fall away. They will put you out of the synagogue; in fact, the time is coming when anyone who kills you will think they are offering a service to God.

Acts 1:8 – But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

Application:

  • ·         Believers bear their testimony to Christ in the power of the Spirit.
  • ·         Because Christians do not belong to the world, persecution from the world is inevitable.
  • ·         Religious people have often persecuted others in the strong conviction that they were doing God’s will.

I Will Send

John 15:22-26 – If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin. Whoever hates me hates my Father as well. If I had not done among them the works no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin. As it is, they have seen, and yet they have hated both me and my Father. But this is to fulfill what is written in their Law: ‘They hated me without reason.’ “When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father—the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father—he will testify about me.

Psalm 35:19 – Do not let those gloat over me who are my enemies without cause; do not let those who hate me without reason maliciously wink the eye.

John 1:7 – He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe.

Application:

  • ·         In the end God’s purpose is always accomplished, despite the belief of those who reject Jesus that they have successfully opposed it.
  • ·         The Spirit will always stand by Christ’s people.
  • ·         “Remind you of everything I have said to you” was crucial for the life of the church—and for the writing of the New Testament.
  • ·         In essence and in action the Spirit is characterized by truth.
  • ·         But the Spirit was “with” Jesus’ disciples and would be “in” them.
