Night

John 13:21-30 – After he had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit and testified, “Very truly I tell you, one of you is going to betray me.” His disciples stared at one another, at a loss to know which of them he meant. One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved, was reclining next to him. Simon Peter motioned to this disciple and said, “Ask him which one he means.” Leaning back against Jesus, he asked him, “Lord, who is it?” Jesus answered, “It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish.” Then, dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him. So Jesus told him, “What you are about to do, do quickly.” But no one at the meal understood why Jesus said this to him. Since Judas had charge of the money, some thought Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the festival, or to give something to the poor. As soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out. And it was night.

John 12:27 – “Now my soul is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour.

Luke 22:3 – Then Satan entered Judas, called Iscariot, one of the Twelve.

John 1:4 – In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.

John 8:12 – When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

Application:

  • ·         Jesus considered praying for God to save Him from this death but refused to do so, because the very reason He had come was to die for sinners.
  • ·         In the Gospels this expression (“Satan entered Judas”) is used on two separate occasions: (1) before Judas went to the chief priests and offered to betray Jesus and (2) during the Last Supper.
  • ·         In light of John’s emphasis on the conflict between light and darkness, “night” may have been more than a time note—picturing also the darkness of Judas’s soul.
  • ·         He is the “light of the world”, who holds out wonderful hope for humanity and for the creation.
  • ·         “Darkness” is both the darkness of this world and that of Satan.
