Samuel 30:5-6 – David’s
two wives had been captured—Ahinoam of Jezreel and
Abigail, the widow of Nabal of Carmel. David was
greatly distressed because the men were talking of stoning him; each one was bitter in spirit because of his
sons and daughters. But David found strength in the Lord his God.
John 8:59 – At this, they picked up
stones to stone him, but Jesus hid himself, slipping away from the temple grounds.
Romans 4:20-21 – Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise
of God, but was strengthened in his
faith and gave glory to God, being fully persuaded that God had power to
do what he had promised.

Samuel 17:37 – The Lord who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will
rescue me from the hand of this Philistine.” Saul said to David, “Go,
and the Lord be with you.”
Application:
- · Those who heard Jesus could not interpret his claim as other than blasphemy, for which stoning was the proper penalty. When Jesus declares I am, there are only two possible responses: to reach for a rock or to fall at his feet.
- · Whereas works are human attempts to establish a claim on God, faith brings glory to him.
- · Reliance on the Lord was essential for the true theocratic king.
