2 Chronicles
24:16-19,24 – He was buried with the kings in the
City of David, because of the good he had done in Israel for God and his
temple. After the death of Jehoiada, the officials of Judah came and paid
homage to the king, and he listened to them. They abandoned the
temple of the Lord, the God
of their ancestors, and worshiped Asherah poles and idols. Because of
their guilt, God’s anger came on Judah and Jerusalem. Although the Lord sent prophets to the people to
bring them back to him, and though they testified against them, they would not
listen…Although the Aramean army had come with
only a few men, the Lord delivered into their hands a much larger army. Because Judah had forsaken the Lord, the God of their ancestors, judgment was
executed on Joash.
Jeremiah
7:25 – From the time your ancestors
left Egypt until now, day after day, again and again I
sent you my servants the prophets.
2
Chronicles 20:20 – Early in the
morning they left for the Desert of Tekoa. As they set out, Jehoshaphat stood
and said, “Listen to me, Judah and people of Jerusalem! Have faith in
the Lord your
God and you will be upheld; have faith in his prophets and you will be successful.”
Application:
- · Just as God had helped the small army of Judah against overwhelming odds when the king and people were faithful to Him, so now in their unfaithfulness they are defeated by a much smaller force of invaders.
- · Israel’s failure to heed the Lord’s prophets ultimately led to her destruction.
- · God had promised that Moses would be the first in a long line of prophets who would speak in the Lord’s name and serve Him faithfully, a promise fulfilled in Christ.
- · “Have faith in the Lord your God and…in His prophets” was a particularly apt word for the Chronicler’s contemporaries to hear from this son of David—at a time when their only hope for the future lay with the Lord and the reassuring words of His prophets.
