Deuteronomy
6:4 – Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.
Application:
- · Because God has no visible form, any idol intended to resemble Him would be a sinful misrepresentation of Him.
- · The memory of God’s redemptive acts is to be kept alive by reciting them to our descendants.
- · Rock was a metaphor to depict the strength and stability of the God of Israel as the unfailing source of security for His people.
- · In any event, no deity, real or imagined, was to rival the one true God in Israel’s heart and life.
- · The truth revealed to Israel was that God is one and that this one God created all things, sustains all things and governs all things. Israel could live serenely in the knowledge that all things and all times were under the rule of one divine King, whose ways are righteous and whose purpose with her and through her is salvation for humankind—from sin and judgment and every evil that has burdened human life. This serenity in the midst of the chaos of history remains the precious gift of faith for all who know and trust the God of Israel.
