1 Chronicles 5:21-6:10
– They carried off their livestock:
50,000 of their camels, 250,000 sheep, 2,000 donkeys, and 100,000 men alive. For many fell, because the
war was of God. And they lived in their place until the exile. The members of the
half-tribe of Manasseh lived in the land. They were very numerous from Bashan
to Baal-hermon, Senir, and Mount Hermon. These were the heads of
their fathers' houses: Epher, Ishi, Eliel, Azriel, Jeremiah, Hodaviah, and Jahdiel,
mighty warriors, famous men, heads of their fathers' houses. But they broke faith with
the God of their fathers, and whored after the gods of the peoples of the land, whom God had
destroyed before them. So the God of Israel stirred up the spirit of Pul king of Assyria, the spirit of Tiglath-pileser king of Assyria, and he
took them into exile, namely, the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe
of Manasseh, and brought them to Halah, Habor, Hara, and the river Gozan, to this day. The
sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. The sons of Kohath: Amram,
Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel. The children of Amram:
Aaron, Moses, and Miriam. The sons of Aaron: Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. Eleazar fathered Phinehas, Phinehas fathered Abishua, Abishua fathered Bukki,
Bukki fathered Uzzi, Uzzi fathered Zerahiah, Zerahiah fathered Meraioth, Meraioth fathered Amariah,
Amariah fathered Ahitub, Ahitub fathered Zadok, Zadok fathered Ahimaaz, Ahimaaz fathered Azariah,
Azariah fathered Johanan, and Johanan fathered
Azariah (it was he who served as priest in the house that Solomon built in
Jerusalem).
Exodus
34:13-16 – You
shall tear down their altars and break their pillars and
cut down their Asherim (for you shall worship no
other god, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous,
is a jealous God), lest you make a
covenant with the inhabitants of the land, and when they whore after their gods
and sacrifice to their gods and you are invited, you eat of his sacrifice, and you take of their daughters for your sons, and their
daughters whore after their gods and make your sons
whore after their gods.
Leviticus 10:2 – And fire came out from before the Lord and
consumed them, and they died before the Lord.
Application:
- · Partaking of food sacrificed to a pagan deity invites compromise.
- · The new community had to be made aware that it existed for God, not vice versa.
