1 Chronicles 4:41-5:3
– These, registered by name, came in the days of
Hezekiah, king of Judah, and destroyed their tents and the Meunites who were
found there, and marked them for destruction to this day, and settled in
their place, because there was pasture there for their flocks. And some of
them, five hundred men of the Simeonites, went to Mount Seir, having as their
leaders Pelatiah, Neariah, Rephaiah, and Uzziel, the sons of Ishi. And
they defeated the remnant of the Amalekites who had escaped, and they have
lived there to this day. The sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel (for he was
the firstborn, but because he defiled his father's couch, his
birthright was given to the sons of Joseph the son of Israel, so that he could
not be enrolled as the oldest son; though Judah
became strong among his brothers and a chief came from him, yet the
birthright belonged to Joseph), the sons of
Reuben, the firstborn of Israel: Hanoch, Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi.
Genesis
49:10 – The scepter shall not depart
from Judah, nor the ruler's staff from between his feet,
until tribute comes to him; and to him shall be the obedience of the peoples.
1 Samuel 12:12 – And when you saw
that Nahash the king of the Ammonites came against you, you said to me, ‘No, but a king shall reign over us,’ when the Lord your
God was your king.
Genesis 25:31 – Jacob said,
“Sell me your birthright now.”
Application:
- · “Until he comes to whom it belongs” is repeated almost verbatim in a section where Zedekiah, the last king of Judah, is told to remove the crown from his head because dominion over Jerusalem will ultimately be given to the one to whom it rightfully belongs.
- · The Israelite desire for and trust in a human leader constituted a rejection of the kingship of the Lord and betrayed a loss of confidence in his care, in spite of his faithfulness during the time of the exodus, conquest and judges.
- · In ancient times the birthright included the inheritance rights of the firstborn.
