Zelophehad

1 Chronicles 7:15-27 – And Machir took a wife for Huppim and for Shuppim. The name of his sister was Maacah. And the name of the second was Zelophehad, and Zelophehad had daughters. And Maacah the wife of Machir bore a son, and she called his name Peresh; and the name of his brother was Sheresh; and his sons were Ulam and Rakem. The son of Ulam: Bedan. These were the sons of Gilead the son of Machir, son of Manasseh. And his sister Hammolecheth bore Ishhod, Abiezer and Mahlah. The sons of Shemida were Ahian, Shechem, Likhi, and Aniam. The sons of Ephraim: Shuthelah, and Bered his son, Tahath his son, Eleadah his son, Tahath his son, Zabad his son, Shuthelah his son, and Ezer and Elead, whom the men of Gath who were born in the land killed, because they came down to raid their livestock. And Ephraim their father mourned many days, and his brothers came to comfort him. And Ephraim went in to his wife, and she conceived and bore a son. And he called his name Beriah, because disaster had befallen his house. His daughter was Sheerah, who built both Lower and Upper Beth-horon, and Uzzen-sheerah. Rephah was his son, Resheph his son, Telah his son, Tahan his son, Ladan his son, Ammihud his son,Elishama his son, Nun his son, Joshua his son.

Numbers 36:10-11 – The daughters of Zelophehad did as the Lord commanded Moses, for Mahlah, Tirzah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Noah, the daughters of Zelophehad, were married to sons of their father's brothers.

• ·         These noble women, Zelophehad’s daughters, who were concerned for their father’s name and their own place in the land, obeyed the Lord.

Zelophehad's Daughters

1 Chronicles 7:3-14 – The son of Uzzi: Izrahiah. And the sons of Izrahiah: Michael, Obadiah, Joel, and Isshiah, all five of them were chief men. And along with them, by their generations, according to their fathers' houses, were units of the army for war, 36,000, for they had many wives and sons. Their kinsmen belonging to all the clans of Issachar were in all 87,000 mighty warriors, enrolled by genealogy. The sons of Benjamin: Bela, Becher, and Jediael, three. The sons of Bela: Ezbon, Uzzi, Uzziel, Jerimoth, and Iri, five, heads of fathers' houses, mighty warriors. All these were the sons of Jediael according to the heads of their fathers' houses, mighty warriors, 17,200, able to go to war. And Shuppim and Huppim were the sons of Ir, Hushim the son of Aher. The sons of Naphtali: Jahziel, Guni, Jezer and Shallum, the descendants of Bilhah. The sons of Manasseh: Asriel, whom his Aramean concubine bore; she bore Machir the father of Gilead.

Incense

Ritual Purity

• ·         Zerubbabel was the last of the Davidic line to be entrusted with political authority by the occupying powers.

Prostituted

Trusted And Helped

1 Chronicles 5:15-20 – Ahi the son of Abdiel, son of Guni, was chief in their fathers' houses, and they lived in Gilead, in Bashan and in its towns, and in all the pasturelands of Sharon to their limits. All of these were recorded in genealogies in the days of Jotham king of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam king of Israel. The Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh had valiant men who carried shield and sword, and drew the bow, expert in war, 44,760, able to go to war. They waged war against the Hagrites, Jetur, Naphish, and Nodab. And when they prevailed over them, the Hagrites and all who were with them were given into their hands, for they cried out to God in the battle, and he granted their urgent plea because they trusted in him.

2 Chronicles 2:20,30 – And they rose early in the morning and went out into the wilderness of Tekoa. And when they went out, Jehoshaphat stood and said, “Hear me, Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem! Believe in the Lord your God, and you will be established; believe his prophets, and you will succeed.”… So the realm of Jehoshaphat was quiet, for his God gave him rest all around.

Application:

• ·         “Have faith in the Lord your God and…in His prophets” was a particularly apt word for the Chronicler’s contemporaries to hear from this Jehoshaphat—at a time when their only hope for the future lay with the Lord and the reassuring words of His prophets.
• ·         Righteous kings have victory in warfare, while wicked rulers experience defeat.
• ·         God’s help brings on the dawn of deliverance, dispelling the night of danger.
• ·         Obedience and trust are the two sides of godliness.
• ·         That the lions were ravenously hungry was no obstacle to the Lord’s rewarding Daniel’s faith by saving his life.

Judah

Application:

• ·         “Until he comes to whom it belongs” is repeated almost verbatim in a section where Zedekiah, the last king of Judah, is told to remove the crown from his head because dominion over Jerusalem will ultimately be given to the one to whom it rightfully belongs.
• ·         The Israelite desire for and trust in a human leader constituted a rejection of the kingship of the Lord and betrayed a loss of confidence in his care, in spite of his faithfulness during the time of the exodus, conquest and judges.
• ·         In ancient times the birthright included the inheritance rights of the firstborn.

The Lord Is My Banner

These were their cities until David reigned.

Exodus 17:15 – And Moses built an altar and called the name of it, The Lord Is My Banner, saying, “A hand upon the throne of the Lord! The Lord will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.”

Application:

• ·         My Banner testified to the power of God displayed in defense of His people when Moses held his hands up to the throne of the Lord to defeat the Amalekites.

Genesis 4:23-24 – Lamech said to his wives: “Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; you wives of Lamech, listen to what I say: I have killed a man for wounding me, a young man for striking me. If Cain's revenge is sevenfold, then Lamech's is seventy-sevenfold.”

Application:

• ·         The practice of inserting short historical notes into genealogical records is common in other Biblical genealogies, such as the genealogy tied to Lamech: Lamech proudly claimed to be master of his own destiny, thinking that he and his sons, by their own achievements, would redeem themselves from the curse on the line of Cain.
• ·         Lamech’s vicious announcement of personal revenge found its counterpoint in Jesus’ response to Peter’s question about forgiveness.

Zerubbabel

• ·         Jehoichin’s grandson Zerubbabel became governor of Judah, but not king.
• ·         Zerubbabel was a Babylonian name meaning “offspring of Babylon,” referring to his birth in exile. Zerubbabel was the last of the Davidic line to be entrusted with political authority by the occupying powers.
• ·         The angel encouraged Zerubbabel to complete the rebuilding of the temple and assured him of the Spirit’s enablement.
• ·         Feared the Lord means showed reverence, respect and obedience.
• ·         Signet ring was a kind of seal that functioned as a signature and was worn on one’s finger. Like other seals it could be used as a pledge or guarantee of full payment. Zerubbabel would then be a guarantee that someday the Messiah descended from David will come.

Manasseh

Application:

• ·         Upon the destruction of the northern kingdom (Israel), Judah had become the remnant of the Lord’s inheritance.
• ·         “As if childless”, not in the sense of Jehoichin’s having no children at all, but of having none to sit on the throne of David in Judah. Jehoichin’s grandson Zerubbabel became governor of Judah, but not king. Zedekiah was a son of Josiah, not of Jehoichin, and he and his sons died before the latter. Jehoichin therefore was Judah’s last surviving Davidic king—until Christ.
• ·         The judgment of exile did not destroy the people of Israel or the line of David. God’s promise concerning David’s house remains.

Application:

• ·         Although David fell into grievous sin, his heart was never divided between serving the Lord and serving the nature deities of the Canaanites.
• ·         Asa saw no hope for success against Baasha without the assistance provided by a renewal of the old treaty with Aram. Although his plan seemed to be successful, it was condemned by Hanani the prophet as a foolish act and a denial of reliance on the Lord. The true theocratic king was never to fear his enemies but to trust in the God of the covenant for security and protection.
• ·         The story of Amaziah, where he purchased the military personnel of non-Judahites, is another instance of condemnation of alliances that imply lack of trust in the Lord.
