Judges 15:15-19 – And he found a fresh jawbone of a donkey,
and put out his hand and took it, and with it he struck 1,000 men. And Samson said,
“With the jawbone of a donkey, heaps upon heaps, with the jawbone of a donkey have
I struck down a thousand men.” As soon as he had finished speaking, he threw
away the jawbone out of his hand. And that place was called Ramath-lehi. And he was very
thirsty, and he called upon the Lord and said, “You have granted this great salvation by
the hand of your servant, and shall I now die of thirst and fall into the hands
of the uncircumcised?” And God split open the hollow place
that is at Lehi, and water came out from it. And
when he drank, his spirit returned, and he revived. Therefore the name of
it was called En-hakkore; it is at Lehi to this day.
Exodus
17:2,6 – Therefore the people
quarreled with Moses and said, “Give us water to drink.” And Moses said to
them, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you test the Lord?”… Behold, I will stand before you there
on the rock at Horeb, and you shall strike the rock, and water shall come out
of it, and the people will drink.” And Moses did so, in the sight of the elders
of Israel.
Numbers 20:11 – And Moses lifted up his hand and
struck the rock with his staff twice, and water came out abundantly, and the
congregation drank, and their livestock.
Application:
- · Paul may have had this incident at Horeb in mind when he spoke of Christ as the spiritual rock that accompanied Israel.
- · Israel fails the Lord’s testing of her by putting the Lord to the test.
- · In his rage Moses disobeyed the Lord’s instruction to speak to the rock. Moses’ rash action brought a stern rebuke from the Lord.
