Judges
17:3-5 – And he
restored the 1,100 pieces of silver to his mother. And his mother said, “I
dedicate the silver to the Lord from my hand for my son, to make a carved image and a metal image. Now
therefore I will restore it to you.” So when he restored the money to his mother, his mother took 200 pieces of silver
and gave it to the silversmith, who made it into a carved image and a metal
image. And it was in the house of Micah. And the man Micah had a shrine, and he made an ephod and household gods, and ordained one of his sons, who
became his priest.
Exodus
20:4,23 – “You shall not make for
yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above,
or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth…You
shall not make gods of silver to be with me, nor shall you make for yourselves
gods of gold.
Isaiah
44:13 – The carpenter stretches a
line; he marks it out with a pencil. He shapes it with planes and marks it with
a compass. He shapes it into
the figure of a man, with the beauty of a man, to dwell in a house.
Zechariah 10:2 – For the household gods utter nonsense,
and the diviners see lies; they tell false dreams and give empty
consolation. Therefore the people wander like sheep; they are afflicted for lack of
a shepherd.
Application:
- · Because God has no visible form, any idol intended to resemble him would be a sinful misrepresentation of Him.
- · The contrast between the one true God in heaven, who does whatever pleases Him, and idols of silver or god, who can do nothing at all, is striking indeed.
- · Man was made in the image of God, but an idol is made in the image of man.
- · Idols were household gods. They were used for divination during the period of the judges.
