Acknowledge That The Most High Is Sovereign

Daniel 3:29-30 – Therefore I make a decree: Any people, nation, or language that speaks anything against the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego shall be torn limb from limb, and their houses laid in ruins, for there is no other god who is able to rescue in this way.” Then the king promoted Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in the province of Babylon.

Daniel 4:1,23-25,28,37 - King Nebuchadnezzar to all peoples, nations, and languages, that dwell in all the earth: Peace be multiplied to you!... And because the king saw a watcher, a holy one, coming down from heaven and saying, ‘Chop down the tree and destroy it, but leave the stump of its roots in the earth, bound with a band of iron and bronze, in the tender grass of the field, and let him be wet with the dew of heaven, and let his portion be with the beasts of the field, till seven periods of time pass over him,’ this is the interpretation, O king: It is a decree of the Most High, which has come upon my lord the king, that you shall be driven from among men, and your dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field. You shall be made to eat grass like an ox, and you shall be wet with the dew of heaven, and seven periods of time shall pass over you, till you know that the Most High rules the kingdom of men and gives it to whom he will…All this came upon King Nebuchadnezzar… Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and extol and honor the King of heaven, for all his works are right and his ways are just; and those who walk in pride he is able to humble.

Application:

· Do I acknowledge that God controls the universe and human kingdoms—and I do not?
· Nebuchadnezzar was punished because he did not renounce his sins and wickedness, do what was right, and be kind to the oppressed.
· The Lord is able to humble the proud and exalt the humble. Am I humbled by God’s grace? Do I confess God’s mercy?

High Places

Hosea 10:2,6-8 - Their heart is deceitful, and now they must bear their guilt. The LORD will demolish their altars and destroy their sacred stones…It will be carried to Assyria as tribute for the great king. Ephraim will be disgraced; Israel will be ashamed of its foreign alliances. Samaria’s king will be destroyed, swept away like a twig on the surface of the waters. The high places of wickedness will be destroyed—it is the sin of Israel. Thorns and thistles will grow up and cover their altars. Then they will say to the mountains, “Cover us!” and to the hills, “Fall on us!”

1 Kings 12:30 - And this thing became a sin; the people came to worship the one at Bethel and went as far as Dan to worship the other.

Hosea 4:13-14

Application:

· Have I foolishly abandoned religious principles for economic, relational, etc., expediency?
· Have my morals eroded?
· Do I formally call to God? Do I dishonor God by pagan worship?
· Am I unfaithful? Am I hypocritical?

Ascended On High

Ephesians 4:7-8 - But to each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned it. This is why it says: “When he ascended on high, he took many captives and gave gifts to his people.”

1 Corinthians 12:7 - Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.

Romans 3:22-24 - This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.

Psalm 68:18 - When you ascended on high, you took many captives; you received gifts from people, even from the rebellious—that you, LORD God, might dwell there.

1 Kings 17:10 - So he went to Zarephath. When he came to the town gate, a widow was there gathering sticks. He called to her and asked, “Would you bring me a little water in a jar so I may have a drink?”

Conclusions:

· Do I use my spiritual gifts for selfish advantage?
· Have I been delivered from slavery to sin?
· Christ's ascension was a fulfillment of God's establishment of His kingdom!!!
· Do I rely on the Lord? Do I demonstrate faith in the Lord?
